"Omaha Table Talk was a wonderful experience. It was one of the few times I felt I could speak about the missing links of race relationship without having to pamper the listener or walk on eggshells. I thoroughly enjoyed the open dialogue and the willingness among the participants to hear alternative points of view. These types of events prove that we can get to the next level." – Franklin Thompson

Welcome to Omaha Table Talk

Do you know your neighbors?
Do you gravitate to the people with which you have the most in common?
How boring and complacent have we become
?

Think of all the unique experiences and differences you have, that can provide others an easy glimpse of another culture.

This was just one of the themes discovered around the table where delicious Spaghetti Bolognese was served. On this night, in over 35 homes across the metro, Omahans took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about their cross town neighbors and the challenges faced by other races and cultures within our community. Our very open, barrier free discussion showed us how we are all more like-minded than one my have thought; but with distinct backgrounds, each rich in interest and appeal.

A simple step out of our comfort zone taught us each a little about people we wouldn’t otherwise have met. Omaha Table Talk may happen but once a year, but many hours go into the planning and coordination, by volunteers, to make the event happen. With humble beginnings, it has doubled participation each of its three years. If all of the 350 participants now acts as an ambassador to discuss what they have discovered about another, with just two or three other people... well you see the possibilities!

To those who did not participate, you have some catching up to do. Here’s a beginning: I challenge you, in February, to visit a neighbor you do not know much about. Allow yourself a moment of personal enrichment and let’s get together in a month or two to see how we have grown.

It’s up to the individual.
It’s up to your choices.
It’s up to choices within your community.
